Building meaningful connections by sharing knowledge, supporting others, and growing as an instructional designer.
Building a Portfolio That Reflects My Strengths
When I compare my work to instructional design job descriptions, I feel encouraged. I already have strong foundational pieces that align with what employers are looking for.
Across my portfolio, I’ve developed:
- Instructional videos that apply multimedia learning principles with intentional pacing and visual design
- eLearning modules that include objectives, scenarios, and knowledge checks grounded in frameworks like ADDIE and UDL
- A resource hub website that demonstrates information architecture, process mapping, and accessible design
- Job aids and infographics that translate complex systems into clear, usable tools
These artifacts reflect a consistent focus: designing learning experiences that make complex information easier to understand.
Networking as Generosity
As I think about professional growth, I’ve started to reframe how I approach networking.
Instead of asking, “What can I gain?”
I’m asking, “What can I offer?”
Networking, to me, is about generosity through sharing what I know, supporting others, and building meaningful professional relationships.
Ways I Support Others Through My Work
There are many ways I can contribute to others in the instructional design community while continuing to grow myself.
I can support peers through:
- Storyboard development
Helping structure learning experiences and align objectives with assessments - Accessibility feedback
Offering insight on UDL, navigation, cognitive load, and inclusive design - Process mapping
Turning complex workflows into clear visuals or infographics - Instructional video feedback
Providing guidance on pacing, signaling, and multimedia design - Collaborative design work
Supporting peers in translating content into instructionally sound learning experiences
These contributions reflect the strengths I’ve developed and allow me to give back in meaningful ways.
Learning Through Connection
Networking through generosity is not one-sided. In supporting others, I also open the door to learning. I look forward to growing alongside peers who have strengths in areas such as audio production, corporate LMS systems, and data analytics and evaluation. This exchange of knowledge strengthens both individual growth and the community as a whole.
What My Portfolio Is Becoming
What excites me most is realizing that my portfolio is no longer just a collection of projects, it’s becoming a professional narrative.
It tells a story about:
- designing for clarity in complex systems
- centering accessibility and inclusive design
- translating policy into usable tools
- supporting onboarding and performance improvement
Looking Ahead
As I continue building my portfolio, I want to be intentional, not just about what I create, but how I connect with others. If I continue refining my work and contributing generously within my network, my portfolio will do more than showcase deliverables. It will reflect how I think, how I design, and how I support others. And ultimately, that’s what makes instructional design meaningful.
